Interview: Suzuki President on turbo-charged revival plans

  • By cannonball

“Turbos are part of Suzuki’s future plans” Toshihiro Suzuki, President and CEO of Suzuki
With Suzuki showing strong signs of emerging from a period of instability and new-model market invisibility in a post 2008 economic meltdown world, now felt like the perfect time to talk to Toshihiro Suzuki, President and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan.

MCN: What has been wrong with Suzuki recently and how do you plan to change and improve the company?

TS: After the financial crisis in 2008 there was a big shift of focus within Suzuki to move more towards the smaller capacity markets in Asia, which is partly the reason for the drop in European new models. Now, starting with the GSX-R models, our focus is on the fun of motorcycles – run, turn and stop – which we believe is a strength of Suzuki. From now on we will build on this strength and always pursue the fun side of motorcycles.

2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke R: First ride

  • By cannonball

We’ve managed to grab a sneaky go on KTM’s new £13,999 1290 Super Duke R here at its world launch in Qatar…before this evening’s technical presentation and tomorrow’s track action at the Losail circuit.

Riding the new super naked (in dealers next February) around the city streets, we stuck strictly to the laws of the land, mindful of the fact that if we were caught being anything  other than angelic, we’d by quickly thrown in jail, then after a few days kicked out of the country, never to return…

No MotoGP wildcard for Davies in 2017, says Ducati boss

  • By cannonball

Aruba Ducati WorldSBK rider Chaz Davies won’t be getting a MotoGP wildcard for Christmas, according to boss Paolo Ciabatti, as the test team already has its hands full developing the non-winged GP17.

And the likeable Italian added Ducati wants to focus Davies on winning the WorldSBK title in 2017.

“There is no plans for the near future,” confirmed Ciabatti, who is Ducati Corse Sporting Director & MotoGP Project Director. “Our target for the 2017 season is clear: we want to win the world superbike title, so there is no need of extra distractions or to take additional risks.

“I know that this is a wish of the rider, but at the moment we are fully focused to validate the GP17. We are working at the development of next year machine so there is no space for other tests. The first riders to return on track will be Michele Pirro and Casey Stoner at Sepang at the end of January, followed by the factory riders Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo for the official IRTA test on the Malaysian track. Pirro and Stoner will remain for the whole length of the test.”
