Sibling Rivalry: A BMW R100 cafe from Federal’s USA shop

A BMW R100 CAFE FROM FEDERAL’S USA
From the moment their first build hit the airwaves, we’ve followed Federal Moto’s career. The Canadian crew has produced one killer bike after another.
So when director Shaun Brandt told us that Federal was opening an outpost in Chicago, we were curious. Would the Americans deliver the same quality as their brethren over the border?
Here’s the answer: a BMW R100 called ‘The Five,’ from the US team of Mike and Peter Müller. It’s their first project, and they’re off to a stellar start.

Death Machines Of London launch with a killer Guzzi
- By cannonball
Thirty years ago, a young James Hilton went out for a bike ride with his uncle. The experience was unforgettable, and so was the caution from his father that quickly followed: “Motorcycles are death machines, son.”
It’s our duty to report that James hasn’t just ignored his father’s advice. He’s turned it on its head, and launched Death Machines Of London. This drop-dead gorgeous Moto Guzzi Le Mans is DMOL’s first build.
It’s a remarkable success for a first effort, but the clue lies in Hilton’s background: he co-founded AKQA, a multi-disciplinary agency that works on the Mortal Kombat video game one minute and Rolls-Royce’s website the next.
Even setting aside our brazen love for old Moto Guzzis, DMOL have worked magic on this 1981 Le Mans Mark 2. The classy paint scheme and curious tail section caught our eye first, but the team’s gone a lot deeper than that.

Who said beer and bikes don’t mix?

THE WYLAM BMW: WHO SAID BEER AND BIKES DON’T MIX?
Beer and motorcycles are fine things. But as we all know, they’re best enjoyed separately—preferably at the end of a long ride, with a cold glass in hand and the bike cooling down within eyeshot.
In the USA, you often see custom bikes sponsored by spirits brands. They go together like rum and coke. But this Anglo-German custom is a much more intriguing combination: It was built to celebrate the launch of a new brewery in Newcastle.

DMOL Up Yours Copper – The Bike Shed

You’ve either got it, or you haven’t. Whether it be good looks, a big brain or a feel for all things mechanical. The latter is often perceived as nurture rather than nature but I don’t buy that one. Study hard, enrol on courses and gather all the experience a life spannering can throw at you and maybe you’ll make a decent mechanic or fabricator but it’s that inbuilt flare and vision that sets apart the good from the brilliant.
I met Ray Petty a few years ago when he rolled a V-twin Jap engined bobber into our Bike Shed London show at Tobacco Dock and fell in love immediately. Ray is a nice bloke but the bike is wonderful. Just to dispel any confusion, I’m talking about Ray Petty the London based Ducati specialist, not the Norton engine builder and tuner from a previous generation. Seeing as we’re Ducati owners here in the ‘Shed, in fact it’s pretty much turned into being a rite of passage, our bikes have always gone to Ray for specialist work. What he doesn’t know about Desmos, Bevels, Testastrettas isn’t even worth Googling but that certainly doesn’t make Ray a one trick pony, far from it. It’s this wealth of experience and aforementioned ability to see the world in blueprints and schematics that cemented the relationship between him and former advertising industry big hitter James Hilton.

Pikes Peak Cloud Racers
- By cannonball
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb celebrated its 100th birthday last weekend with a field of entrants that the pioneers of the event could barely have imagined.
The race snakes up a single road over 12.42 miles of tarmac to the summit of Pikes Peak, some 14,115ft above sea level. And once a year, a bunch of hill-climb addicts pit themselves and their motorcycles, sidecars, quads, cars and trucks in the Race to the Clouds. It’s America’s version of our TT – except they have cliff edges, altitude sickness, snow, and bears to contend with!

1972 Honda ATC90: James Bond’s Honda
- By cannonball
Value £2500-£5000
“The US90 made its debut in the Bond film Diamonds are Forever, and was a big hit. It eventually morphed into a kind of utility vehicle for farmers, which is why it is called an ATC90, which stands for All Terrain Cycle. They were eventually made illegal in America as they had a tendency to roll over, which is when quads took over.
